We recently visited Home Bargains’ flagship store in Liverpool. The branch opened in November 2019 and highlights the retailer’s direction of development, adding more features to widen its offering and broaden its appeal.

We visited the store on its opening day to understand how Metro is flexing its Super C format to adapt to the local environment. We were impressed by the design and the well-tailored assortment. The retailer is also testing a different category layout and wider assortments for organic foods and large pack products.

We spend a day with Coop Norge, visiting some of their latest store concepts. The retailer is currently testing an unstaffed solution at one of its discount store Extra, in Oslo, a first in Norway. It continues to evolve and improve its assortment to align with shopper needs and the market trends.

The new concept was built using the latest trends in interior architecture and design, as well as the evolution of consumer expectations since the banner's last update five years ago. At the same time, the store remains focused on low prices. The new store concept is embedded in the needs of the city-based shopper, and it illustrates a significant move away from the standard store format that is typically found in suburban and rural locations.

We recently visited Poundland Park Street Walsall, one of the 24 stores trialling the retailer’s new pricing structure. Poundland is looking to move further away from its dependency on the one price point, grow its range and satisfy more shopper needs. In this report we explore the store and trial further, identifying what we can learn about Poundland’s evolution.
