Thornton’s Budgens in Belsize Park, London, has launched a new range of plastic-free products, including store cupboard essentials, drinks and personal care products.
At the end of 2018, Thornton's Budgens store in Camden switched more than 1,700 product lines to plastic-free packaging, with the aim of becoming "virtually plastic-free" within three years. By January 29th, 2019, the store had 1,897 plastic-free products. Products packaged in plastic were replaced with alternatives in beechwood netting and coconut bowls.
The store has now expanded its plastic-free offer with its new Unpacked range, in collaboration with environmental campaign group A Plastic Planet. The range is made up of 200 products including loose pulses, grains and seeds, and an extended range of vegan and gluten-free items. Shoppers can also fill up reusable glass jars with everyday essentials including peanut butter, milk and orange juice. Ethical Fairtrade coffee will be available for purchase in plastic-free cups.

We expect retailers to continue to push their sustainability credentials further in the future.
This year, Waitrose launched its ‘Waitrose Unpacked’ trial in its Botley Road branch, Oxford, removing hundreds of products out of their packaging and launching new in-store refill zones dispensing loose products. Following a positive response from customers, with over 90% of those surveyed saying they would continue to shop the concept, the retailer announced it would be extending the trial in Oxford and in three more stores by the end of the year.
