Amazon launches pop-up store on Pinduoduo

Date : 26 November 2019

Amazon has launched a pop-up store on Chinese ecommerce platform Pinduoduo.

Selection of 1,000 products

Pinduoduo is a group buying platform that allows shoppers to use their social network to make group purchases and benefit from discounts. Shoppers can invite their contacts to create a group to get a lower price for their purchases. Amazon has now opened a pop-up store on the platform that will run until the end of December. The store offers a range of around 1,000 overseas products.

The move follows Amazon’s announcement in April that it would shut down its domestic ecommerce marketplace business in China by mid-July to focus on cross-border business.

Utilising existing traffic

Pinduoduo has seen rapid growth since its launch in 2015, now with 110 million monthly active users, and is establishing itself as a major player in the market. Partnering with Pinduoduo allows Amazon to utilise the platform’s existing traffic, and compete with the likes of JD.com and Alibaba.

In September, JD.com launched its own online platform, Jingxi, to tap into the growing trend of group buying. The new service comes in the form of a dedicated app as well as a mini-app within WeChat.
