Newly remodelled Hedge End is Sainsbury’s most important store refurbishment since Selly Oak a year ago. It creates an inspiring and easy-to-browse store that is relevant to local shoppers. Key features include its sharp focus on value, new look beauty, toys and general merchandise departments, and SmartShop checkout.

We visited Wilko’s newly opened store in Acton, North West London. At 10,500 sq ft it is smaller than the retailers standard store. Expansion in London is a priority for the retailer and adapting the core proposition to fit into smaller sites is key to that expansion.

Aldi launched its first trial Local store in March 2019 in Balham, South London. Aldi has emphasised this is not a move to expand into convenience. Instead, it is a response to the challenges of operating in London, with a lack of the larger sites with car parks. In this store visit report we look at the format in more detail and identify how it differs from standard Aldi stores.
