News from the Netherlands

We round up the latest news from Dutch retailers Jan Linders, Jumbo and Lidl.

Lidl tests scan & go

Lidl is testing scan & go in its store in Huizen as an extension of the self-scan facilities that it currently offers. The discounter also plans to trial the technology in Oud-Beijerland at the end of December 2019.

Lidl said, “We see that customers want to pack their groceries right away. With the hand scanner, customers can scan their products themselves, store them in their shopping bags and pay at the self-scan checkouts. We think that we can offer our customers an extra service.”

There are currently 13 Lidl stores with self-scan checkouts. Lidl hopes to expand to 27 stores by the end of the year. However, it will not roll out the technology on a large scale due to the lack of space in existing stores. It said making room for the self-scan checkouts would be at the expense of the efficiency of the customer flow.

Jumbo to open new e-fulfilment centre in Bleiswijk

Meanwhile, Jumbo’s third e-fulfilment centre in Bleiswijk in southern Netherlands is expected to start operations in early 2020. The new facility will serve as a logistics hub to aid the growth of Jumbo’s online grocery store.

The retailer opened its first EFC in Den Bosch in 2014, followed by its second in Raalte in 2018. The two facilities are expected to reach full capacity by the end of 2020.

Jan Linders CEO steps down

In other news, Leo Linders has announced he will step down as CEO on 1 February 2020. Linders will be succeeded by currently operations director Ferry Moolenschot. He will remain as a major shareholder and advisor.

Commenting on his decision, Linders said, “Of course I didn't make this decision overnight, but after having worked in our family business for 37 years, of which more than 20 years as General Manager, this is a good time to transfer the management… With Ferry Moolenschot, we have found a successor that has been part of the Jan Linders family for several years, that fits in with our company and our culture and that has clearly achieved success in recent years.
