David Jones and BP have opened their first convenience store on a petrol forecourt in Bayside, Melbourne.
A new offer for petrol forecourts
David Jones announced in August that it would partner with BP to open David Jones branded stores on petrol sites in Sydney and Melbourne, with the store at Bayside on the corner of North Road and Nepean Highway marking the start of the partnership. The first store will be open 24 hours a day and has over 400 SKU's across food-to-go, food-for-now and groceries under David Jones' private label. The store retains popular BP features, such as its Wild Bean Cafe and self service checkouts, plus there is dedicated parking bays for customers.
10 more stores to open by April 2020
The retailer will open 10 more forecourt stores over the coming months, with five in Melbourne between December and March in Ringwood, Glen Waverley, Brighton, Clarendon and Greensborough and five in Sydney between February and April in Rozelle, Artarmon, Kingsford, Ashfield and Mosman. Learnings from these stores will be assessed before more stores are rolled out.

Convenience innovation a key trend for 2020
David Jones is on a drive to bring a more premium food offering to Australian consumers, through its food halls, its first standalone premium convenience store that opened in Melbourne in October and also petrol forecourts. While fuel sites dominate the convenience sector in Australia currently, innovation in this area has lagged the broader grocery market, but this is starting to change. David Jones' latest store, follows Woolworths launch of its first new Metro store on a Caltex forecourt last week.
