Middle East: expansion and sustainability

As LuLu discusses its expansion plans for Saudi Arabia, Majid Al Futtaim, at a corporate level, aims to remove freely distributed plastics from across its operations and Deliveroo extends its coverage in the UAE, we round up news from the region.

LuLu to expand in Saudi Arabia

Speaking at an event in the country, LuLu’s chairman and managing director, Yusuff Ali, discussed the retailer’s plans for expansion in Saudi Arabia. Yusuff Ali highlighted the initiatives being implemented by the government to integrate the country’s economy into the global one, noting that ‘Saudi Arabia is fast becoming the economic and investment hub of the region’.

He went on to say that the retailer is expanding its presence in the country by opening 10 stores across its hypermarket and supermarket formats. This growth would be enhanced by the launch of its new app, which will allow shoppers to buy from across its complete range.

Majid Al Futtaim to phase out single-use plastic by 2025

At a corporate level, so including all its operations, not just those under the Carrefour banner, Majid Al Futtaim has announced an aim to phase out single-use plastic by 2025. The company said it would implement the initiative country-by-country, but would instigate it at all its operations, including shopping centres, cinemas and all its Carrefour stores. A key part of the strategy will see Majid Al Futtaim-operated Carrefour stores remove 500m plastic grocery bags out of circulation annually.

Discussing the step, Majid Al Futtaim Holding’s chief sustainability officer, Ibrahim Al Zu’bi, said: “[W]e need to continue to push the sustainability agenda at a faster pace, and our customers are very much a part of that. We listen to them, and we want to make it easy for them to make smart choices to live a sustainable life - and hopefully to support brands that are making a real difference in the war on plastic.

Al Othaim reports positive Q3 results

Al Othaim said sales rose 11.0%, to SAR1.9bn (US$515.8m) in Q3 2019 versus the same period in 2018, while its operating profit increased by 87.6% to SAR84.5m (US$22.5m).

Deliveroo extends reach in UAE

Deliveroo has launched its food delivery service in Sharjah, marking the addition of its third city in the country. Shoppers will now be able to order food from restaurants and takeaways in the city for delivery to their homes. To advertise the launch, Deliveroo is offering free delivery to all customers ordering from one of the 115 restaurants with which it is collaborating.

Talking about the launch, the general manager for Deliveroo in the GCC, Anis Harb, said: “The UAE has proven to be a very exciting market for Deliveroo, with a diverse range of partners and customers across markets.
