Aldi Sud, Germany: new pop-up bistro
Aldi is launching a pop-up bistro this month in Cologne, Germany, to support its Einfach ist Mehr (Simple is More) marketing campaign. The 90 sq m venue will be made up of eight upcycles shipping containers located in the Mediapark and will operate for three months, seating 50 people at a time. Aldi will be able to use this initiative to boast its foodie credentials, with all food, wine and coffee from across Aldi's private label ranges.
Aldi Nord, Netherlands: refreshed new format
Aldi Nord is evolving its offer in the Netherlands with a new format. The first store opened last month in Enkhuizen, North Holland, and features an in-store bakery. The new store openings will give shoppers an enhanced store experience with an improved look, however the biggest change is within the fresh category which is now located more centrally within the store. Aldi has created a dedicated website for the format, labelling it 'Fresh. Innovative'.
Lidl, Portugal: €70m expansion plans
By the end of this year, Lidl Portugal plans to have invested€70m in to the market - €20m more than last year. In an interview with a national newspaper, Lidl Portugal president Afrodite Pampa said that this investment will contribute towards six new stores at around 1,400 sq m each. Portugal has 246 stores however there is scope to grow further in the country's smaller cities. Lidl will also refit 70 existing stores and in a world first, will introduce an in-store cafe.
Netto, Sweden: new concept stores
Netto opened two new concept stores earlier this week in Mullsjö and Kållered, southern Sweden. Commenting on the development, director Peter Jakobsen has said, ‘We have updated our concept. It is a more modern and fresher layout, [there are also] other colours and large changes in the product range. We have, for example, greater facilities for refrigerators and freezers, and fruit and vegetables … [The] test stores will lay a foundation for our future stores.
